How to drain water from the oil-water separator of a forklift?

Dec 11, 2025

Shutdown and safety preparations: First, park the forklift on a flat ground, turn off the engine and apply the handbrake. As the oil-water separator may be connected to a high-pressure oil circuit, it is necessary to wait for 5 to 10 minutes for the system pressure to be naturally released to prevent fuel splashing when draining water.

QQ20251211155946Positioning oil-water separator: The oil-water separator is usually installed on the oil supply line from the fuel tank to the engine. It is a cylindrical or square metal tank in shape, with an oil inlet pipe at the top and a water drain valve at the bottom. Some models are equipped with a transparent observation window. If the location is not determined, you can refer to the equipment manual or consult the manufacturer.

Moisture release operation

Open the drain valve: Use a wrench or a special tool to slowly unscrew the drain valve (usually a hexagonal bolt or plug). When you hear the gas escape sound, the water will flow out along with the fuel mixture.
Observe the emissions: At the initial stage, turbid liquid (containing impurities and moisture) may be discharged. Stop when clear fuel comes out. If there is too much water accumulated in the separator, it needs to be drained several times until it is clean.

Close the valve: Tighten the drain valve to ensure there is no leakage. Some models require the drainage button or electronic switch to be reset simultaneously.

Inspection and maintenance

Sealing check: Start the engine and run it briefly to observe whether there is any oil leakage around the drain valve.
Regular cleaning: If there is sediment inside the separator, the filter element should be removed and cleaned with diesel, or a new filter element should be replaced (depending on the maintenance cycle).

Record the discharge cycle: Adjust the water discharge frequency according to the working environment (such as damp or dusty). It is recommended to check every 50 to 100 working hours.

Notes

It is strictly prohibited to drain water when the engine is running, otherwise it may cause high-pressure fuel to spray out and hurt people.

The discharged wastewater contains diesel components and should be treated as hazardous waste and must not be directly poured into the drainage system.

If the drain valve is clogged, it can be cleared with thin iron wire, but be careful not to damage the sealing surface of the valve core.

In northern winters, attention should be paid to the problem of ice formation at drainage outlets. If necessary, insulation devices should be installed.

Typical fault handling: If the engine shows symptoms such as reduced power and black smoke after draining the water, it may be that the filter element is clogged or the water has not been completely drained. The filter element needs to be replaced immediately and the water drained again.
