At the beginning of the 21st century, the domestic commercial vehicle market was highly competitive. From February to May 2000, FAW proposed the idea of developing the next generation of products. The planning and development of the Jiefang J6 was officially initiated as early as 2001. In fact, it was developed simultaneously with the fifth-generation model. To catch up with the world's advanced level of heavy trucks, the J6 was designed with the European heavy truck standards as its core research and development goal from the very beginning. The J6 platform of FAW Jiefang is a world-class new commercial vehicle platform independently developed and researched by FAW Jiefang in line with the world's truck development technology, which is adapted to China's national conditions.
During the long research and development process, the project team of Jiefang has encountered countless difficulties and setbacks, solving over 1,500 technical problems. In the process of independently developing the Jiefang J6, FAW has obtained more than 300 innovative technologies and applied for 197 national patents, among which 46 innovations were first applied to domestic trucks. The development of the "J6" product across 5 major platforms, 12 series and over 300 models was completed in one go. This simultaneous development of the entire series of products is the first of its kind in China. As China's first high-end heavy-duty truck with international competitiveness, the Jiefang J6 has completely broken away from the route of technology introduction. Relying on independent research and development, it has successfully solved five major technical problems including "the whole vehicle, engine, automotive electronics, cab and production manufacturing", ending the history of China's inability to manufacture high-end heavy-duty trucks.
On July 15, 2007, the sixth-generation heavy-duty truck J6, independently developed by FAW and crafted over a period of six years, made its debut, shining brightly. The product features reliability, economy, power, safety and comfort. It is an epoch-making product in the development history of FAW. It has successfully achieved the full alignment of the independent core technology of the Jiefang brand with the contemporary international level.
The Jiefang J6 has set a new benchmark for domestic commercial vehicles. Its wide-body cab adopts a room-like design concept. The bold and powerful lines and the double-shadow design of the "FAW" door emblem still catch people's eyes to this day. The four-point airbag suspension in the cab, combined with the airbag seat for the driver, greatly enhances comfort. The interior structure and material selection are meticulously crafted and of outstanding quality. On October 20, 2009, China's automotive industry witnessed its first historic moment of annual production and sales reaching 10 million units. The Jiefang J6 was honored to roll off the production line at the celebration, representing the level of China's automotive manufacturing.
In the same year, the J6 heavy truck project of FAW Jiefang won the Special Prize of the "China Automotive Industry Science and Technology Award", which is known as the Nobel Prize of China's automotive industry. This was the first Special prize project of the award since its establishment.
In 2010, the Jiefang J6 ascended to the highest national science and technology award stage - winning the "First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress in 2010", becoming a benchmark for high-end commercial vehicles in China.
On June 9, 2017, the new J6 of FAW Jiefang was launched nationwide. The product underwent six major innovations and 75 technological upgrades, which brought a refreshing experience to the market. In the same year, Jiefang J6 produced a total of 700,000 complete vehicles.
On July 15, 2019, the one millionth Jiefang J6 rolled off the production line at the Changchun factory, continuing the legend of the "divine car".
On February 22, 2023, the high-end cargo J6G of FAW Jiefang was launched, becoming a leading product of FAW Jiefang's efforts in the green channel market.
The "divine car" J6 of Jiefang has brought vigorous vitality to the booming Chinese commercial vehicle market.
