Are light trucks always overheated? Have you checked these places?

Dec 22, 2025

What are the reasons for high temperatures in light trucks?
1. Insufficient coolant: Coolant will be consumed during daily use. If the coolant is insufficient, it cannot cool down the engine well, making the engine hotter and hotter and unable to work normally.
2. Dirty radiator: During driving, dust and dirt will adhere to the surface of the radiator, hindering the smooth flow of air between the radiator fins and greatly affecting the heat dissipation efficiency.
3. Failure of the cooling fan: The cooling fan removes the heat of the coolant in the radiator by increasing the force of drawing in external air. If the fan does not operate normally, it will be unable to cool down the coolant. In addition, if the spiral bimetallic strip temperature sensor on the front cover of the fan malfunctions, it will also affect the start and stop effect of the fan.
4. Thermostat damage: The thermostat will switch the large and small circulation ranges according to the temperature of the coolant, adjust the amount of water entering the radiator, and ensure that the cooling system is in an appropriate mode for heat dissipation. When the thermostat malfunctions, the valve will fail to work properly. If the large circulation cannot be started on time, the heat dissipation capacity of the entire cooling system will be limited, causing the engine temperature to continuously rise.
5. Malfunction of the circulating water pump: The circulating water pump exerts pressure on the coolant, causing it to circulate within the cooling system. During use, there is a certain probability that situations such as pump shaft wear, blade wheel breakage, rubber sealing ring aging and deformation, and water seal seat cavity wear will occur, resulting in slow and unsmooth coolant circulation speed and insufficient circulation pressure.
6. Clogging of water tanks and pipelines: Some truck drivers add tap water as an emergency when the coolant is insufficient. If there are many impurities in the water, over time, scale will form in the water tank or pipelines, blocking the flow of coolant and affecting the circulation efficiency of coolant.

What should be done when the water temperature is high?
When driving and encountering a vehicle warning of excessively high water temperature, you should immediately slow down and pull over to the side of the road. At this time, do not directly turn off the engine. When the water temperature is too high, the temperatures of parts such as the piston, steel wall, cylinder and crankshaft are all higher than the normal working temperature and are in an expanded state. If the engine is shut down at this time, after cooling, it may cause the components to get stuck, wear to increase, and even lead to cylinder sticking, making the engine unable to work normally.

If the engine cannot be turned off, can cold water be used to cool it down? The answer is no. When the engine temperature is very high, pouring cold water on it will be even more dangerous. When an engine with extremely high temperatures comes into contact with cold water, it will deform and crack due to sudden cooling. In severe cases, it may even cause the cylinder head or cylinder block to burst, endangering the people around.

The correct approach is to let the engine idle naturally to cool down. If the temperature remains high, you can try spraying water on the radiator to lower its temperature. After the engine has been stable for a period of time, you can put on gloves, place a wet towel on the radiator cap, and then gently unscrew the radiator cap a small gap to allow the high-temperature steam to slowly escape. After the pressure in the water tank drops, check whether soft water or coolant needs to be replenished.
