How did the cross shaft of the forklift drive get damaged?

Oct 20, 2025

The transmission cross shaft of a forklift (commonly known as the cross shaft or universal joint cross shaft) is an important component in the transmission system. It connects the two sections of the transmission shaft and allows for the transmission of power at different angles. The fracture of the cross shaft may be caused by the following reasons:

Fatigue damage

During operation, the cross shaft is subject to alternating stress. After long-term operation, micro-cracks may form inside the material and gradually expand, eventually leading to fracture.
This kind of fatigue damage usually occurs at the journal or shoulder of the cross shaft, which are areas of stress concentration.

Overload or shock

When a forklift is operating under heavy load or harsh conditions, the transmission system may be subjected to excessive torque or impact force, causing the cross shaft to break.
For instance, when a forklift is excavating hard soil or rocks, if it is operated improperly or encounters unexpected obstacles, it may generate excessive impact force.

Insufficient lubrication

The cross shaft requires good lubrication to reduce friction and wear. If the lubrication is insufficient or the lubricating oil deteriorates, it will lead to accelerated wear on the surface of the cross shaft, which may subsequently cause fracture.
Regular inspection and replacement of lubricating oil is one of the important measures to prevent the breakage of cross shafts.

Improper installation

If the cross shaft is not correctly aligned or fixed during installation, it may cause uneven force distribution during operation, which in turn may lead to breakage.
When installing, it is necessary to ensure that the cross shaft fits well with other components of the transmission shaft to avoid gaps or excessive tightness.

Material or manufacturing defect:

The material quality or manufacturing process of the cross shaft may have defects, such as impurities inside the material or improper heat treatment, all of which may cause the cross shaft to break during use.
Choosing reliable cross shaft products and purchasing them from regular channels is the key to preventing such problems.

Preventive measures

Regularly inspect the wear of the cross shaft and replace the severely worn parts in a timely manner.

Ensure that the transmission system is well lubricated and change the lubricating oil regularly.

Avoid long-term operation of forklifts under heavy loads or harsh working conditions to reduce the occurrence of overloading and shock.

When installing the cross shaft, make sure it is correctly aligned and fixed to avoid uneven force distribution.

Choose reliable cross shaft products and purchase them from regular channels.
